hurricane sandy, the governors of new york and new jersey are asking for $80 billion in federal aid. many homeowners thought they were already covered by federal flood insurance but as michelle miller reports this morning they are getting an unwelcomed surprise. >> reporter: roman and mariana's staten island home was flooded by 11 feet of water when sandy struck. >> how high did the water come in? >> it went through the ceiling on to the first floor. >> reporter: they had flood insurance through fema. that's common for people who live in flood zones. they thought the inspector from fema would give them a check to repair $100,000 in damages. >> first floor where you're standing right now is definitely not covered by the flood policy. >> why? >> this neighborhood is considered to be in the flood zone. >> reporter: under fema's flood insurance program the first floor of a house should be used for parking or storage only. furnaces and water heaters are covered but finished walls, floors and furniture are not. that caught them and other homeowners we met by surprise. >> this is the sole reason

at the sandy hook elementary school in newtown. the president said he was skeptical about an nra proposal to put an armed guard in every school. >>> former president george h.w. bush remains in a houston hospital this morning, but mr. bush was moved back to a regular room on saturday, out of the intensive care unit. he'd spent a week there being treated for a persistent fever. a spokesman says he continues to improve. >>> federal officials are investigating a tour bus crash in eastern oregon that killed at least nine people. the bus driver apparently lost control on an icy road yesterday. the investigators say the bus driver swerved, hit the guardrail, flipped, falling down some 100 feet of a steep embankment. the bus driver survived. more than 20 were injured. the bus was headed from las vegas to vancouver. >>> russian investigators are investigating a flight recorder of a russian jet trying to land in moscow. the only people onboard saturday's crew, five were killed. barry petersen reports. >> reporter: the footage from a passing driver shows debris exploding across the moscow highway a

today's nfl game. they welcomed scores of people from the sandy hook elementary school and greeted the children, teachers and parents. a moment of silence was observed for the 27 victims killed in the tragedy. the tribute was complete with a new york giants route of the philadelphia eagles. >>> the death toll has reached nine in a tour bus crash on an icy highway in oregon. it happened this morning in frigid conditions on interstate 84 near pendleton in northwest oregon. police say the driver of the charter bus lost control on the slick pavement. the bus skidded through a guardrail and tumbled several hundred feet down an embankment. about 40 passengers were traveling from las vegas to vancouver, british columbia. in addition to the nine passengers who died, more than 20 people including the driver were injured. they are being treated at hospitals in oregon, washington and idaho. >>> people in several parts of the u.s. face dangerous driving conditions and hazards thanks to a winter tri-fecta of snow, wind and freezing temperatures. crews kept busy plowing roads while the homeowner
